Call for Entries: Explore This! 10

We are excited to be accepting entries for Explore This! 10, our annual online exhibition.  This show provides a wonderful opportunity to submit mixed-media artwork with colored pencil pigment as the primary medium. Once judging is complete, accepted entries will be displayed on the CPSA website for an entire year.  Please click here for the prospectus and more details about Explore This! 10:

Colored Pencil and Monoprint on Bristol

ET! is open to both CPSA members and non-members. If you have already renewed your CPSA membership for 2014, you are eligible for the lower member entry fee of $15 for Explore This! However, your membership dues must be received prior to October 31, 2013 for you to receive the discounted entry fee. The non-member entry fee is $20.

This year’s juror is Amy Galpin, Ph.D. She is the Associate Curator of Art of the Americas Department of Curatorial Affairs at the San Diego Museum of Art. Her exhibitions for the San Diego Museum of Art include: Women, War and Industry; RubĂ©n Ortiz-Torres: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; Hugo Crosthwaite: Brutal Beauty; and Behold, America! Art of the United States from Three San Diego Museums.

Explore This! is an excellent way to present your artwork to a broad-based audience without incurring shipping costs. It also is a great forum to explore new media and materials. Copper leaf, colored grout, monotype and collage are some of the lesser known media and approaches used in past ET! exhibitions. Three-dimensional artwork is also accepted in ET!

CPSA founder, Vera Curnow, believes that it is important as artists for our voices to be heard through our artwork. Please consider entering Explore This! and giving your work a voice this year.

Got Art??

Do you have artwork that you'd like to share with CPSA and the art world? We have two wonderful opportunities for you to do just that. Check out the two current exhibit opportunities at CPSA:

Fall ArtSpectations

We did it! CPSA is introducing a new online competition called ArtSpectations. This show is open to all CPSA members with separate categories for signature and non-signature members. Each category will have its own Best of Show and Honorable Mention awards. Artwork may be either 100% colored pencil or predominantly colored pencil.

The Fall ArtSpectations opened for entries on September 5th. Members may enter up to five colored pencil works for just $10 each. The awards juror this time will be Jeff George, CPSA, a 10-yr merit award honoree. Winners will be posted on the CPSA website (www.cpsa.org) no later than November 16th.

To enter, go to http://cpsa.fluidreview.com and check out the eligibility rules and how the entry system works. You can view all the art submissions from the Welcome page or by clicking on “Submissions” on the upper left black bar at the competition site.

We hope you will support this new competition.  If it does well this fall and next spring, we will continue the project, which is a result of the request of many of our members to have a competition/exhibition just for them.

Explore This! 10

Our annual online exhibition, ET! 10, will open for entries by members and non-members on
September 15th.

The prospectus is currently available at our website under the Shows/Events tab.  This exhibition is for colored pencil work combined with at least one other medium. Colored pencil must be the predominant medium.  We encourage your most creative ideas for this exhibition.

Explore This! is one of two competitions that CPSA hosts where you can earn signature status.  If you are a CPSA member and your art is accepted and appears in three ET! exhibitions within ten years you can earn your CPX signature status.

Watch this blog for more information on ET! 10 later this week and in the mean time, you can review the prospectus at: http://cpsa.org/images/PDFs/CPSA_ET10_Prospectus.pdf

CPSA Presents ArtSpectations!

Consistently over the years, we at CPSA have heard this question, "Could we please have a competition for...?" Usually the question is completed with the words: beginning artists, intermediate artists, non-signature artists, or any other kind of artist you can think of.

Since the board has fielded this question so many times, we began to look at what is really behind this particular question. We came to the conclusion that our artists want more exposure and more feedback on their artistic growth. Here's hoping we were right.

Good news! In response to your pleas, we are piloting a brand new type of competition called "ArtSpectations." Here are the main features:

  • It's an online, viewable competition for CPSA members only (2013 or 2014).
  • All artwork that is predominately colored pencil and meets our eligibility rules is accepted.
  • If you have a Facebook account, you can comment and/or share your favorites on your FB timeline.
  • Judging for our first Fall ArtSpectations will be done by Jeff George, CPSA, 10-year merit award winner.
  • Awards for Best of Show will be in two categories: signature and non-signature, as well as five Honorable Mention awards in each category. Plus, winners will be featured on our blog and Facebook.
  • You can submit up to five entries for $10 each. Payments are through the PayPal system.
  • Artwork that has been accepted into prior CPSA exhibitions, Explore This! (ET!), and the international, are not eligible.
  • Artwork entered in ArtSpectations is eligible for future ET! and international exhibitions.

The Fall ArtSpectations is set to open Thursday, September 5th and the deadline for entries is October 31, 2013. The competition will be accessible via a link on our website, www.cpsa.org, the morning of September 5th.

We are using a software package called ReviewRoom, developed by FluidSurvey, which has been customized by CPSA for our purposes. On the welcome page of Fall ArtSpectations you will find:

  • The official eligibility rules (also accessible by a link in the upper-right menu).
  • A link called "How Does This Work?" which is a short article on how to use the software.
  • A link called "View the Current Submissions" where you can see what others have submitted.
As I mentioned, this is a pilot program for the end of the 2013 year and into 2014. We expect to have this fall competition and then another Spring ArtSpectations beginning in February. If well supported by our members, we will continue into the next year.

We would love to hear feedback from our members on this new pilot program. Any concerns or hallelujahs can be sent to me, Cindy Haase at: president@cpsa.org.
