CPSA End of Year 2010 Update

19th Annual Exhibition

The Prospectus has been a few days later than expected in being available, but it is every bit as important and full of information about the exhibition and the convention which will be held this year in Dallas. You can find it now at the www.cpsa.org website. The link is on the home page, and it is also here. 2011 Prospectus. Be sure to read the Specifications and Requirements carefully. This exhibition requires 100% colored pencil. Last year's awards totaled over $14,000. As in previous years, submissions are accomplished on line through http://www.callforentry.org (CaFE).

Featured Artist at the CPSA.org website

Please visit the website-- Harada/Featured Artist-- to get a bit more acquainted with the 2010 winner of the CIPPY Award at the 18th Annual International Exhibition. Shinji Harada, a Signature Member, won this prestigious and valuable award with his "Grapes in a Basket." Shinji resides in Yokohama, Japan and has had artwork accepted in four CPSA International Exhibitions and won awards in three of them. Congratulations, Shinji.

Explore This! 7 Entry Deadline November 15th

The entry deadline for the CPSA online exhibition, Explore This! 7, is only a few short days away.  November 15th will be the last day to submit your entry for this exhibition.  Remember that the art for this exhibition does not have to be for sale and does not have to be shipped--two very important considerations. The accepted artwork will be posted at the CPSA website for an entire year--February 1, 2011 to January 31, 2012.  Be sure to enter using the CaFE (callforentry.org) website.  You do not have to be a member of CPSA to enter. Member and nonmember entries are given the same consideration.  If you have more than one entry, be sure to submit them at the same time. The prospectus containing rules and entry information can be found at the www.cpsa.org website. Select the link in the left column on the home page.

October Update for CPSA


SIGNATURE SHOWCASE BOOKS
The Signature Showcase books have been received from the publisher and  Kay Schmidt is now processing the first 250 orders.  For one person to box, tape, label, and deliver the books to the post office is quite a task.  Rest assured, however, if you have already ordered a book (or books), your order is currently being processed.  If you included an email address with your order, you will also be notified when the book is shipped.  For orders placed after October 15th, please allow 2 – 3 weeks for shipping.
If you haven’t already heard about this new book, it is a full color, high quality soft cover book (size 8"h x 10"w) containing artwork by 177 CPSA Signature members. Statements accompany the artwork to give insight into the creative processes used by these artists.

EXPLORE THIS! 7
If you haven’t submitted your entry yet for the Explore This! 7, don’t panic yet.  The entry deadline is November 15th.  This exhibition is a juried on line exhibition which will appear on the CPSA website for one full year—February 1, 2011 through January 31, 2012.   Awards include a $1500 cash award for Best of Show. This is your chance to show your versatility and sense of adventure by combining colored pencil with other media or using colored pencil on a different surface or several surfaces.  Please review the prospectus (available at www.cpsa.org) to ensure that your artwork meets the specifications. Then submit your entry using the callforentry.org website (CaFE). 
Instructions for entering are included in the prospectus and there is a document to assist with sizing your image properly.  The CaFE site also has instructions to assist you.   If you still have questions regarding preparation of your materials, please contact Paula Parks, Exhibition Director.  Her email address and phone number are included in the prospectus.
Juror for this show is Ken Rollins who has served as Executive Director of four art museums in Florida, all of which were very successful under his leadership and he has served on several advisory boards for art museums.

2011 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL

November 1st marks the beginning of another year in CPSA. 2011 renewal cards for current members are at the printer and will be mailed in the next few weeks. Although your 2010 CPSA membership is current until Oct 31st, we will begin processing renewals on September 1.   Look for your renewal card in the mail.
 
There are two ways to pay your CPSA Membership Dues, by mail or online at the website, www.cpsa.org.   CPSA's online payment vehicle is Paypal, but you do not need to have a Paypal account to use the online service.  If you pay by mail, please remember to send in your renewal card or a membership application found at our website.
 
Please note memberships outside the US or Canada will be $55 starting in 2011.

Convention is Over but CPSA is Still Busy!


Limited Edition Book Coming in September -- Signature Showcase

Being at the convention is definitely a plus.  Seeing the artwork "in person" is such a treat and getting together with other cp artists is inspiring and informative.  If you start planning and saving now, you can be there!

Convention Recap - Top Award to Shinji Harada of Japan

TOP WINNER of 18th Annual is CPSA Signature Member Shinji Harada of Japan, who was unable to accept his award in person.  This was Shinji’s fourth time and third award in our International Exhibition. Shinji also has the honor of being our first international top award winner. The title of his winning artwork is "Grapes in a Basket".  More about this artist coming soon.

There are 19 other award winners.  The artists' names, titles of the artwork and images can be found at Winners 2010.

The convention was held at the Santa Clara Biltmore Hotel with events happening every day.  Following two days of meetings by the Board and the District Chapter delegates, there were two days of workshops by CPSA members, Ester Roi and Allan Servoss.  As usual, the popular Membership Meeting on Thursday evening wowed the audience by showing all entries to this year's show and giving out a multitude of door prizes.  In fact, all members who put a ticket in at the meeting received a door prize!    The most exciting part of the Membership Meeting evening is learning who has the winning bids for the Silent Auction pieces.  This year after a feverish final round of bidding, the top bid was for the work by Elizabeth Patterson, CPSA (CA).  You can see the entire group of donations at 2010 Silent Auction.

The 20th Anniversary fundraising raffle for which we sold tickets brought in just under $2000.  We are very grateful to those of you who bought tickets and the multiple winners this year are very pleased as well.


It was a great time to be together.  If you haven't attended a convention, please try to fit it into your plans for next year.  More information on that event coming soon.

This fun-filled event gives convention attendees an opportunity to purchase original colored pencil artwork and at the same time raises money for CPSA. Some of our best artists have generously donated 36 beautiful works, so take a look and decide which ones you might want to purchase for your collection.

18th Annual CPSA Convention/Exhibition fast approaching

HOTEL RESERVATIONS
If you haven't already made reservations at the Santa Clara Biltmore, now is the time to act. CPSA reserves a block of rooms in order to obtain a special rate (Garden Rooms $99.00 + Tax for up to 4 people; Tower Suites $109.00 + Tax for up to 4 people; Japanese/American breakfast buffet included). These affordable rates apply until July 16, 2010 or until the CPSA block is full. We are currently at 80% capacity, so do yourself a favor and book your room soon.

ROOMMATE SERVICE
If you are interested in sharing a room with another convention attendee, please let Gemma Gylling know (conventions@cpsa.org). She will put you in touch with others who are looking for a roommate.

We hope to see many of there at the convention, it should be lots of fun. It is, after all, the 20th anniversary of CPSA!

AWARD NOTIFICATION
With the exhibition opening less than a week before the convention starts, the award judging will take place later than usual. Notification of award winners will occur as soon after the judging as possible. If you wish to receive your award in person, it would be wise to make reservations in advance.

Spring Update for CPSA

18th International Exhibition
The artwork for the 18th exhibition has been chosen by our juror Janet Bishop, curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. You can view the list of selected artists on the cpsa.org website.   Congratulations to each of those included in the show.   Final jurying for Awards will be July 22nd after the artwork arrives at the exhibition location.

Order Your DVD of the 2010 Exhibitions
CPSA offers a DVD of the two exhibitions held this year—Explore This! 6, our online exhibition, and the 18th International Exhibition.  This is a great way to have a record of the exhibition and a way to view the artwork if you are unable to attend the convention or visit the gallery.  The DVD will play on computers with DVD software and on your TV monitor if you have DVD capabilities on it.  It comes with an optional music background.  All entries are identified with the artist’s name and the title of the artwork.  You can learn more about the DVD and purchase your copy at the cpsa.org website.
Support CPSA and give yourself an opportunity to win some wonderful prizes including boxed pencil sets and an Icarus Drawing Board. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  You need not be present to win – but it’s exciting to be there for the drawing!  You can download a sheet of tickets at the cpsa.org website (PDF).

CPSA – New Things Happening

 If it’s been a while since you visited our website at www.cpsa.org, you will be surprised and impressed by what’s happening this year.

To The Point
The Spring issue of the CPSA magazine is currently in the works and will go to press soon. This issue celebrates the 20th Anniversary of CPSA. It all began twenty years ago when Vera Curnow wrote a letter to The Artist’s Magazine and, with the help of other colored pencil enthusiasts, got the organization off to a running start that has continued to grow.
Convention News
With the convention rapidly approaching, we are very busy behind the scenes getting everything ready. Be sure to sign up for the events at the CPSA website. Convention Registration. Both Ester Roi and Allan Servoss are popular instructors, so don’t delay, as the workshops are filling quickly. Also, remember that the deadline for the lower CPSA rate at the hotel is BEFORE the notification of award winners.
 
20th Anniversary Raffle
This fun raffle takes place at the Membership Meeting on Thursday evening during the convention. There are 7 prizes, and 7 winning tickets will be drawn – one for each item. Prizes include an Icarus Drawing Board donated by Ester Roi (who is presenting a workshop at the convention this year) and six sets of pencils valued from $181 to $400! From Prismacolor, we have two wood box sets of 96 Prismacolor colored pencils; from Caran d'Ache, we have a Luminance 6901 76-color tin, a Pablo 120-color tin, a Supracolor watersoluble 120-color tin, and a Neocolor II watersoluble wax pastel 84-color tin. Could the prizes get any better!? You can purchase tickets for $1 each or 6 for $5. A ticket sheet is downloadable from the CPSA website. You need not be present to win.

Signature Showcase Book
A new book of colored pencil art has been our dream for quite some time and will finally become a reality. All current Signature members of CPSA were invited to contribute to this beautiful book. Vera Curnow is editing the submissions and Rick Boggan, our former Corporate Image Director, is designing the layout. We hope to have it ready before the convention and will be taking orders soon.

Is Your Artwork Ready? March 31st Deadline is Just Around the Corner!

The entry deadline for the 18th Annual CPSA Exhibition is March 31 at 11:59pm Mountain Time.  Don’t miss the opportunity to have your work considered for this show at The Art Museum of Los Gatos, California, July 22 - August 20, 2010.

We invite everyone to join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary at the 2010 convention in Santa Clara, California, July 28-31. The scheduled events include:

·         Workshops by Ester Roi (showing how to use her Icarus Drawing Board) and Allan Servoss, CPSA (exploring new ways to choose subject matter and interpret ideas creatively)

Award Winners & Donors

The exhibition includes 55 artworks chosen by juror Barbara Grazul Hubbard to be included in this special exhibition of innovative and creative ways to use colored pencil in conjunction with other media. To quote Ms. Hubbard, “This was a very challenging and difficult decision. The works were fabulous! I was intrigued by the use of new media together with colored pencil...”

There are 11 donated awards and those companies and district chapters who were so generous receive our grateful thanks. You can view the award winners and learn a little more about the winning artists by selecting the “Meet the Artist” link on the Award Winners page.
